State authorities shuttered the building during the Soviet era, stripping its religious purpose for mundane municipal uses. The nave functioned sequentially as a storage warehouse, a student club, and an athletic gym. The property returned to the Catholic faithful following political reforms, allowing the congregation to restore the sanctuary, resume public worship, and mark the milestone anniversary of its founding.
