Residents crossing into Kremlin grounds face tight security gates and midday tour crowds across Cathedral Square.
The Cathedral of the Archangel stands on Cathedral Square between the Great Kremlin Palace and the Ivan the Great Bell Tower. Dedicated to the Archangel Michael, the church held celebrations for Russian military victories. Italian architect Aloisio the New introduced Italian Renaissance elements that Moscow considered exotic, though subsequent restorations and repairs stripped away many of those original imported details.
The interior served as the dynastic necropolis for Russian rulers, starting when Grand Duke Ivan Kalita was interred in the earlier stone church on this site. Monarchs and royal relatives rested beneath ornamented whitestone tombstones and bronze glazed cases until the capital moved to St. Petersburg. Boris Godunov was excluded from burial here, while Tsar Peter II became the final ruler interred after dying in Moscow.
Frescoes depict Serbian saints and rulers alongside Byzantine figures, reflecting the dynastic heritage of Ivan the Terrible through his mother Elena Glinskaya. The building survived fire damage and wall tilting caused by soil shifting during palace construction. Following battle damage in the Russian Revolution, Soviet authorities closed the church and transferred historical treasures to the Kremlin Armory.
