Civil servants and long-term researchers pass armed checkpoints between parliamentary chambers and national broadcast headquarters while public debates shape the rebuilding of the fire-damaged palace.
Chandra Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana constructed the estate as a private home before expanding the site and selling the complex to the state as the official prime ministerial residence. Following the end of the Rana dynasty, the property became national administrative grounds. The compound holds both legislative chambers, the Pratinidhi Sabha and the Rastriya Sabha, alongside ministries, Radio Nepal, and Nepal Television.
The grounds lie north of Babar Mahal and Thapathali Durbar and east of Bhadrakali Temple in the urban core. Severe unrest during youth protests destroyed the prime minister's office and central structural wings, initiating ongoing public debates over heritage restoration and government rebuilding. Anyone working across these ministries encounters active rebuilding projects, tight security protocols, and dispersed department desks.
