Residents in Leopoldstadt trade the noise of the amusement rides for endless running space under the trees of Hauptallee.

About the place

Expansive floodplain woodlands meet public entertainment grounds in Leopoldstadt.

The park originated as an imperial hunting reserve with restricted access for nobility before Emperor Joseph opened the grounds to the public. Coffee houses, bowling alleys, and carousels followed this transition, establishing the amusement zone known as the Wurstelprater. Tree-lined avenues like the Hauptallee cut through the woods to connect Palais Augarten with the Lusthaus.

Engineering projects and major exhibitions reshaped the natural terrain. Regulation of the Danube River deepened the channel and lowered groundwater levels, turning river branches into standing pools and confining original floodplain vegetation to southeastern sections. Major events introduced paved roads such as Ausstellungsstraße, while civil clashes during revolutionary unrest unfolded across the grounds near Praterstern.
