About the place

Fischer von Erlach designed Karlskirche to anchor imperial Vienna after catastrophe, combining classical Roman monuments with Austrian Baroque power.

The elder Fischer von Erlach secured the imperial commission over competitors Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt and Ferdinando Galli-Bibiena following the final Viennese plague epidemic. His design pairs a classical Greek portico with triumphal columns sculpted by Lorenzo Mattielli. Following the architect's death, his son Joseph Emanuel finished the high dome with altered proportions, aligning the church toward the Hofburg palace.

The adjacent ground once held the Spitaler Gottesacker cemetery, the unlocated resting place of composer Antonio Vivaldi. Secular chamber ensembles now perform his compositions inside the sanctuary under the Baroque cupola. Decades later, actress Hedy Lamarr married arms manufacturer Friedrich Mandl in the church chapel, drawing high society to a site established as an imperial votive monument.

Today the Knights of the Cross with the Red Star maintain the building as an active parish and student ministry for the adjacent Vienna University of Technology. Standing directly on the boundary of Wieden and the central district, the structure balances the concert halls of the Musikverein across the square while students and commuters cross the Karlsplatz park outside.
