About the place

A monumental terraced staircase integrates contemporary exhibition galleries directly into the hillside.

The complex occupies the Yerevan Cascade in the central Kentron District, ascending the slope from the Tamanyan Street pedestrian garden. Massive limestone staircases combine outdoor fountain terraces with enclosed exhibition spaces tucked into the structural foundation. Daily pedestrian life converges on the exterior plazas, where open public pathways link the central valley directly to higher residential avenues.

Development began through a partnership between the national government and the Cafesjian Museum Foundation of America, which took stewardship of the unfinished concrete framework. Substantial private investment funded the reconstruction of the terraces and subterranean halls. The eventual inauguration gathered state leadership, cabinet ministers, foreign diplomats, and artists to establish a civic arts hub.
