About the place

The Casa Rosada houses the executive offices of the presidency at the eastern edge of Plaza de Mayo.

The executive branch operates from the Casa Rosada, though the head of state resides outside the capital at Quinta de Olivos. Standing at the eastern edge of Plaza de Mayo, the palatial complex occupies the footprint of the colonial harbor fortress. Its current Italianate facade unites the old state house with the central post office under a monumental central arch, creating an asymmetric compound painted entirely in pale pink.

Tradition attributes the building's distinctive pink coat to political compromise between opposing Federalist red and Unitarian white factions, though period builders also blended bovine blood into lime whitewash to repel river humidity. The complex houses a museum featuring presidential relics, historical carriages, and excavated masonry from the original fort, which integrated the palace grounds with the park behind it.
