The Manhattan Life Insurance Building stood on Broadway in the Financial District as an architectural milestone. Designed by the firm Kimball & Thompson, the tower surpassed all contemporary Manhattan skyscrapers in height. A later northern expansion enlarged the structure, solidifying the insurance firm as a prominent commercial occupant along the canyon of Broadway.

Corporate shifts reshaped the address when Manhattan Life sold the property to Frederick Brown, who quickly transferred ownership to Manufacturer's Trust Company. Central Union Trust Company subsequently acquired and remodeled the complex. The historic tower was ultimately torn down to construct an annex for an adjacent banking high-rise, leaving archival records divided over the demolition timing.
