烏克蘭國立歷史博物館: 周边有什么、如何前往、何时最合适 · 2026年
Researchers based here spend weeks sifting through archaeological and ethnographic holdings rather than browsing the public galleries on a quick pass.
The National Museum of the History of Ukraine chronicles Ukrainian statehood from prehistoric antiquity to modern times.
The institution originated as the Museum of Antiquities and Arts following a public archaeological exhibition. Local residents financed the initial building designed by architect Vladyslav Horodetsky. Early leadership under Vikentiy Khvoyka and Mykola Biliashivsky established the primary archaeological holdings, bolstered by donations from the Tereshchenko and Khanenko families. Danylo Shcherbakivsky expanded the ethnographic departments.

Soviet nationalization absorbed private collections while evicting the museum to the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastic grounds. That transfer split the art collections off into an independent institution. Wartime occupation led to extensive plunder by foreign forces, sending key treasures through Hochstedt Castle before postwar recovery via Munich. Surviving collections relocated to the arts school building designed by Joseph Karakis.
The permanent holdings extend beyond archaeological artefacts into numismatics, historical weapons, manuscripts, prints, and national liberation movement relics. Academic research defined the institution through a graduate school that prepared specialists in archaeology and ethnography. Although wartime looting caused permanent collection losses, surviving archives preserve state history from antiquity to modern times.
