Old Town residents plan their evenings around curtain times at Wrocław Opera, accepting crowded transit stops in exchange for regular box seats.
The institution stages productions in an Old Town theater designed by Carl Gotthard Langhans and supervised by Carl Ferdinand Langhans. Successive fires prompted repeated extensive remodelings led by architects Carl Johann Lüdecke and Karl Schmidt. Following the initial fire, director Theodor Lobe recruited conductor Ernst Schuch to begin his professional musical career at the venue.
The local operatic tradition grew from an Italian troupe organized by Antonio Maria Peruzzi alongside venues run by Franz von Schuch and Johann Christian Wäser. Abbé Vogler later brought a youthful Carl Maria von Weber to conduct the company. In later years, the stage mounted modern work such as Arnold Schönberg's Die glückliche Hand before political hostility drove music director Franz von Hoesslin into exile.
