Residents crossing between the peninsula and Taipa must catch public buses or licensed taxis because private vehicular traffic is prohibited along this span.
Edgar Cardoso designed the crossing during Portuguese administration to replace ferry journeys between the Macau Peninsula and Taipa. Locally called The Old Bridge, the structure spans the former Baia da Praia Grande near Casino Lisboa towards the slope of Taipa Pequena. Its middle section rises to form a triangular silhouette that allows marine vessels to sail underneath.
Private passenger cars cannot use the span. Road access remains reserved exclusively for public buses, licensed taxis, and emergency response vehicles. Pedestrians cross the passage for daily commutes or athletic jogging. Historic toll collections ceased as transit volumes expanded, while shoreline modifications later altered the total overwater length between the shores.
