Domkirche St. Marien stands as the primary Roman Catholic cathedral in Sankt Georg, marking the post-Reformation return of Catholic episcopal architecture.

Arnold Güldenpfennig designed the cathedral in a Romanesque revival style under the direction of Bishop Bernhard Höting of Osnabrück. Its imposing twin-tower facade deliberately echoes Bremen Cathedral to honour Archbishop St. Ansgar. The building represents the first major Roman Catholic church erected in the city after the Reformation.
