Originally constructed in Brievengat as the penal center for the Netherlands Antilles, the complex was long known as Koraal Specht after the local area. Authorities later renamed the institution Bon Futuro and subsequently Sentro di Detenshon i Korekshon Kòrsou. Throughout these shifts, the compound remained the solitary island prison, operating under chronic overcapacity and dilapidated physical infrastructure.
