Francisco Mendes International Airport stands as a decommissioned aviation facility on the eastern outskirts of Praia.
The airfield was established east of central Praia on Santiago Island during the colonial era to connect the archipelago with overseas routes. Following national independence, authorities renamed the grounds in honor of Francisco Mendes, an independence activist and prime minister of Guinea-Bissau. Commercial flights operated here until capacity constraints demanded a modern replacement.

A serious aviation incident occurred when a domestic government flight carrying the prime minister crash-landed on the tarmac, causing casualties among security personnel. Aviation authorities later deactivated the airfield entirely and shifted scheduled flights to a newly constructed facility nearby, subsequently named Nelson Mandela International Airport. The old grounds remain an open landmark east of the harbor.
