The Pacific coastal edge hosts the historic zoological grounds of the city.

Positioned directly between Lake Merced and the Pacific Ocean, the grounds occupy the southwestern perimeter of the city. The city department of recreation partners with a nonprofit society to run daily operations. Ocean winds sweep through open outdoor grottos designed without traditional bars to separate visitors from the animals.
