Residents in neighbouring Barrio París-Londres step out from winding cobblestones straight into central avenue exhaust, using the thick Franciscan nave as a daily refuge from downtown transit noise.
The Franciscan church complex stands in downtown Santiago along the Bernardo O'Higgins thoroughfare. Built during the colonial period, the nave and adjacent convent rank among the oldest surviving structures in the nation. Repeated major earthquakes destroyed early towers and choir sections, but the thick masonry walls held. Architect Fermín Vivaceta raised the current Victorian tower, adding its prominent public clock.
Urban redevelopment altered the monastic grounds when the order sold land parcels to construct Barrio París-Londres. Cobblestone residential streets now replace the demolished convent sections directly behind the church. The surviving cloisters house the Museo Colonial, holding religious art and historical collections. For long-term residents, the complex provides quiet stone courtyards insulated from dense city traffic.
