Residents living beside Flushing Meadows-Corona Park swap quiet streets for the constant hum of weekend festival crowds and vintage park machinery.
Craftsman Marcus Illions carved the wooden figures on Coney Island, combining separate amusement works to prepare the attraction for the New York World's Fair. The ride features rows of jumping mounts, stationary horses, a menagerie beast, and passenger chariots. It operated on a nearby fairground plot before relocation to its present site inside Flushing Meadows-Corona Park.
Unlike dismantled exhibition pavilions from the fair, the ride remains in regular public service at its permanent Queens location. Long-term neighborhood residents treat the park grounds as functional community space, where preserved vintage timber carvings operate beside community sports fields rather than behind velvet ropes in a museum hall.
