Residents around Mount Saint Alban trade subway proximity for hilltop seclusion, depending on cross-town buses to reach the commercial core.
Congress chartered the Protestant Episcopal Cathedral Foundation to erect a church and schools for education and charity. Planners chose Mount Saint Alban, the highest wooded hill overlooking the capital, after federal plans for a nondenominational monument were discarded. Bishop Henry Yates Satterlee selected a Gothic design over Renaissance concepts, engaging British architect George Frederick Bodley to draft the master scheme.
Construction progressed steadily under Boston architect Philip Hubert Frohman, who refined the Gothic blueprint by enlarging the western front and inserting a central tower carillon. Frohman defended his architectural vision by persuading cathedral trustees to dismiss consulting architect Ralph Adams Cram after disputes over alterations.
Beyond the stone sanctuary, landscape designer Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. shaped the wooded close, while Nellie B. Allen installed an intricate walled knot garden. The hilltop grounds also hold the historic Celtic Peace Cross, dedicated in a ceremony addressed by President William McKinley. The complex functions as the episcopal seat for national church leadership, maintaining daily worship schedules and open public paths.
