Delicate Arch forms a freestanding sandstone span above the desert floor of Arches National Park. Local ranchers initially called the natural span the Schoolmarm's Bloomers and the Chaps before scientific expeditions gave the formation its modern name. A park boundary expansion later integrated the formation into federal protection.

The designated parking area fills rapidly throughout daylight hours, causing major vehicle congestion.
