You will cut past Tremont Street crowds on your daily walk through Downtown, stepping right alongside colonial burials without leaving the city core.
Granary Burying Ground occupies land that once belonged to Boston Common before the town partitioned the block for public institutions. It became Boston's third burial site after King's Chapel ran out of room. The ground took its current name from a storehouse that stood where Park Street Church now stands on the corner.
Puritan theology prohibited religious icons, which led local carvers to express ideas through slate markers bearing winged skull motifs. Victorian stewards later moved those markers into straight alignments so that lawn mowers could navigate between the rows, leaving the gravestones out of sync with the remains buried below.
Major figures from the American Revolution lie within the enclosure, including Robert Treat Paine, Samuel Adams, John Hancock, and Paul Revere. Victims of the Boston Massacre and Christopher Seider rest here as well, kept behind an Egyptian Revival gateway designed by architect Isaiah Rogers to secure the central streetfront.
