Oxford Castle preserves the western Norman and Saxon defensive core.

Norman baron Robert D'Oyly built the fortress by diverting a Thames stream into a moat, creating an urban stronghold over the Anglo-Saxon town border. While the castle began with timber works and an earthen motte, builders gradually replaced defences with stone curtain walls, integrating St George's Tower into the western gate system.

The compound lost defensive value as regional conflict subsided, evolving into an administrative hub and county gaol for Oxfordshire.
