The fortified settlement occupies a prominent ridge above the Utcubamba Valley near the towns of Maria and Tingo. Built by the Chachapoyas civilization, the stone citadel housed an urban community until its abandonment following the Spanish conquest. Overgrown vegetation and tree roots subsequently concealed the outer ramparts for generations until local authorities rediscovered the ruins.
