Diergaarde Blijdorp operates as a historic zoological garden and conservation institution in northern Rotterdam.

The institution began in the urban core near Kruiskade as an exhibition garden for pheasants and waterfowl under animal trainer Henri Martin. The foundation relocated the grounds north to the Blijdorp district just ahead of the wartime aerial bombing that destroyed the historic city centre. Dutch architect Sybold van Ravesteyn designed the modern layout alongside the central railway station, earning the complex national heritage monument status.

The grounds are organized across zoogeographic zones and include the Oceanium marine complex on the western perimeter. Long-term residents encounter a functioning research facility rather than a simple leisure park, anchored by a dedicated conservation centre that breeds threatened Lesser Antillean iguanas. Past gorilla enclosure escapes and municipal budget disputes have repeatedly reshaped security barriers and municipal operational subsidies.
