Про місце

Domus Sanctae Marthae provides specialized lodging for clergy conducting formal business with the Holy See.

Standing adjacent to St. Peter's Basilica, the structure owes its name to Martha of Bethany, the biblical sister of Mary and Lazarus. Construction concluded during the pontificate of Pope John Paul II to establish dedicated quarters for church administration. During a papal conclave, voting members of the College of Cardinals move into these rooms to reside under absolute seclusion until a new pontiff is chosen.

Outside election periods, the building operates as a residential hospice for ordained visitors conducting affairs with the Holy See. Daily routines follow strict clerical schedules rather than standard hospitality customs. Long-term occupants face perimeter checkpoints and rigorous entry controls, trading regular urban freedom for direct access to central Roman curial departments without leaving official territory.
