A medieval fortification tower stands reconstructed in late Gothic brick on the southern flank of the Old Town Hall.

The gate formed the eastern portal of the initial medieval wall ring, paired across the settlement with the western Kaufingertor. Salt wagons moved between these two checkpoints along the main trade road through town. Builders later altered the passage to create the municipal hall tower, joining civil administration directly to the defensive structure.

Lightning destroyed the original structure alongside the Old Town Hall, prompting master builder Jörg von Halspach to erect a late Gothic brick tower while managing construction on the Frauenkirche. Wartime air raids leveled the structure, leading planners to reconstruct Halspach Gothic exterior rather than post-medieval adaptations.
