Lake Victoria: what's nearby, how to get there and when to go · 2026

Residents plan their weeks around passenger ferry departures from Entebbe and Port Bell, relying on water routes rather than tarmac roads to move between coastal settlements.

About the place
About the place

Lake Victoria spans the continent as its largest freshwater body, functioning as an inland sea that defines regional commerce and boat transit.

Lake Victoria ranks as the largest tropical lake on the planet and the expansive centerpiece of the African Great Lakes system. Only Lake Superior covers more surface among global freshwater bodies. The waters fill a shallow continental depression rather than a deep rift, discharging northward through Ripon Falls. Extensive island groups ring the perimeter, creating isolated communities that rely entirely on water transport.

Before European expeditions arrived, Arab trading caravans navigated inland paths near the basin while pursuing gold and ivory. British traveler John Hanning Speke reached the southern shore and named the expanse after Queen Victoria, claiming the discovery of the Nile source. That assertion provoked an acrimonious scientific dispute with Richard Francis Burton until Henry Morton Stanley circumnavigated the entire perimeter.

Modern life on the lake depends on passenger vessels and train ferries linking ports like Entebbe, Port Bell, Jinja, and Kisumu. Long-term residents use these water corridors for daily commerce and cross-border travel, yet maritime safety remains an ongoing hazard. Past disasters involving passenger vessels such as MV Bukoba and MV Nyerere demonstrate the perilous conditions and regulatory gaps that affect regular crossings.

I confess in all honesty=)

I didn't even think I would be so comfortable in America; everything went perfectly. It was fun, I practiced my English, I didn't get sick, and I didn't gain weight) I earned good money, learned a ton of new information, and traveled. We often went to Boston together. Oh, and what a time that was) I fell in love with Boston so much. You know, it's a mix of a big, noisy city and a calm beach area. It's so beautiful and clean there! So peaceful and at the same time, it has an active pace of life. * I attended a Linkin Park and 30 Seconds to Mars concert in Mansfield. It was my dream; I grew up listening to their songs. And here you are, with a bunch of American fans, rocking out at a live concert, and you just can't believe it all* That's how our summer went, in a work-party mode. But don't be afraid of the work. I didn't witness a single instance of negativity towards the staff. On the contrary, all the guests try to lift your spirits. They look at your name tag and say, "Oh, my name is Victoria too, how cool," or just gesture for you to smile, joke around, or ask how you're doing, etc. In general, they show attention, and that's nice. And our tips were good. Sometimes you didn't even need to cash your pay check. Me and Felix from the Dominican Republic, who lived with us. I love him very much and we still talk to this day=) And that flag with his wishes is sitting on my windowsill in the dorm. *Everyone chooses for themselves how they will spend their time. Everyone shapes their own summer. I met students who didn't like anything at all. I don't know why; either they didn't do anything to make their stay overseas happy, or they were just moody and pessimistic * Below in the photo are the four (the fifth left us after a month) main heroines of this story (the frogs) and our new friends=)

Celebrities, California

If stars are lit, it means someone needs it... And in America, they are lit every second. In the very first minutes of our stay in America, in New York, we were lucky enough to run into the lead singer of Gym Class Heroes at JFK. And then I immediately realized that I was in America, the land of freedom. A country where dreams and desires come true, where everything can become a reality!!! Because in reality, if you become famous in the USA, it means the whole world will know you. It's not for nothing that everyone—well, what am I saying, everyone, stars from all countries—dreams of getting to America, doing something to get noticed, something everyone would know about. To become famous... America gives them that opportunity. There is nothing impossible here. Impossible is nothing!!!! And if you have become such a person, I mean, if you already belong to words like celebrity or famous, then everything worked out. America has lit many stars. Almost all of them live in the USA, but some continue to live in two countries (for example, the UK and USA), some prefer to live in Italy and fly to Los Angeles for shoots and castings on a private jet. But most of the so-called stars live in Los Angeles and New York. So, each of us can meet our idol or just a celebrity we like absolutely anywhere. Almost all of them are ordinary people who don't hide behind the backs of huge bodyguards and don't ride in armored limousines. If you are in LA, then welcome to the world of show business! SHOW TIME! As you know, something very interesting always happens when meeting famous people. This case did not pass us by either. One day, our guys went for a ride on Sunset Blvd. In general, for those who know, it's not a poor place ;) So, our guys are driving along and one of them fell behind. Maga turned around to call his friend and stared at a couple walking behind him. - Serega, hurry up!..... Aaaa.... it's... it's... Then Serega overtakes them and turns around to see who it is. - Robbie Williams?!!!! Robbie didn't react and kept walking with his girlfriend. The guys stopped, grabbed the camera (for once they had it with them when they needed it!!!). Maga, as the strongest in such matters, but not the strongest in English, went up to Robbie.))) - Excuse me! Can we take a photo with you? - f* u! (Robbie replied) - What??? - f* u! f* u! f* u! - Why? please, can we take one? - f* U!!!! Robbie and his girlfriend turn into one of the fashionable hotels, while the guys stand in shock and look at them. They went inside. Then Robbie opens the door and shouts: I'll come back and... f* U!!!! Ahahahaha))) wow!!! We laughed at this incident for a long time. This is where the law of meanness really manifests itself: you have a camera, but no photos )))) Subsequently, we met a lot of celebrities. The guys went to see the new Batman at an elite cinema. Elijah Wood was there with a friend. On Doheny Dr, we met Lindsay Lohan's sister (she is very popular in America). We saw Vin Diesel in a car and Eddie Murphy in a convertible. Victoria Beckham came to a private club to see our friends. They also met Antonio Banderas on 3rd Street Promenade. At LAX airport, a friend took a picture with Mike Tyson. We saw Matthew McConaughey in Malibu. In general, if you really want to, you can just take off and fly (as they say)!!! And without any ceremonies or concerts, you can see all your favorites on the city streets, in shops, etc. Everywhere there are expensive hotels and restaurants, beauty salons, fancy cars, and stars trying to hide behind all these sunglasses, huge hats, and baggy outfits))) But such is their fate))) Because a celebrity is a person who spends their whole life trying to achieve fame, and then walks around in dark glasses so they won't be recognized.)))
