Tenants living in the Mackie Building's upper residences balance historic preservation limits and lakefront commercial traffic against living directly above the former grain exchange floor.
Financier Alexander Mitchell commissioned architect E. Townsend Mix to construct the property as an investment, originally calling it the Chamber of Commerce. The hall functioned as the Milwaukee Grain Exchange, handling regional wheat auctions and grain inspections. Here traders introduced the octagonal pit design that commodity exchanges nationwide later adopted. Mix placed the structure beside Mitchell's bank building.
Inside, the trading room displays Italian Renaissance plasterwork, hand-painted frescoes, and gold leaf ceilings above the former market floor. Federal authorities listed the property on the National Register of Historic Places after commercial trading ceased. The building now divides its floors between active offices and residential apartments, requiring tenants to adapt to historic preservation limits and street traffic.
