Konum hakkında

Key West operates as an isolated coral cay where maritime geography shapes daily logistics and street life.

The settlement occupies low coral terrain surrounded by deep shipping channels in the Florida Straits. Within Old Town, narrow lanes and strict parking restrictions make private vehicles burdensome, prompting residents to commute on foot, bicycles, or scooters. Higher ground around Solares Hill avoids the coastal flooding that periodically inundates low-lying avenues during major ocean surges.

Okumaya devam et

Trade winds and ocean breezes moderate summer temperatures across the cay, creating distinct wet and dry periods. Unlike the mainland peninsula where storms break during the afternoon, island rain falls primarily as brief early morning downpours. Long-term residents plan around the tropical storm season, stocking emergency supplies and monitoring maritime advisories as late-summer depressions develop.

Sustained maritime traffic established strong ties to Cuba and the Bahamas, visible today in neighborhood dining traditions and historic timber architecture away from Duval Street. Commercial activity concentrates on central thoroughfares where literary saloons draw transient crowds, while quieter residential corners retain marine salvage lore dating back to Spanish naval charting.

Bilmekte fayda var
  • Golf carts must occupy standard vehicle parking spaces and cannot be left on pedestrian walkways.
  • Motor scooters and bicycles are permitted to park on sidewalks directly outside destinations.
  • Severe hurricanes can prompt mandatory island evacuations because of major storm surge inundation.
3 kural daha
  • Enterprise and Alamo rental counters operate away from the airport terminal, requiring travelers to take a shuttle.
  • Narrow and directional streets make driving difficult across the island, and vehicle parking is costly.
  • Limited parking spaces and compact stall dimensions make small rental cars preferable to larger models.
Sıkça sorulanlar
Is a car necessary for getting around Key West?

Driving on the island is difficult due to narrow streets and limited parking. Visitors generally get around by bicycle, motor scooter, on foot, or by using local buses and rideshares. A rental car is largely unnecessary unless traveling through the wider Florida Keys chain.

What weather conditions define the seasons in Key West?

Key West features a tropical savanna climate with distinct dry and wet periods. The dry period is typically sunny with minimal rainfall, while the wet period brings brief, heavy morning downpours. The island also faces threats from tropical storms and hurricanes during the wet season.

Kaynak: Wikipedia
How do travelers reach Key West from mainland Florida?

Travelers can fly directly into Key West International Airport on scheduled commercial flights. Another common route involves arriving at mainland airports in Miami or Fort Lauderdale and traveling south along the Overseas Highway. Shuttle vans, regional buses, and connecting public transit routes also connect the mainland to the island.

Which islands comprise the City of Key West?

The municipality encompasses the main coral cay alongside neighboring islands in the Straits of Florida. Its territory includes Sunset Key, Fleming Key, Dredgers Key, and the northern section of Stock Island.

Kaynak: Wikipedia
Why was Key West historically known as Cayo Hueso?

Spanish explorers designated the island Cayo Hueso, which translates to bone cay. The name originated from human bones found on the land, as indigenous groups had utilized the cay as a burial ground.

Kaynak: Wikipedia
How do hurricanes impact Key West?

The island is vulnerable to hurricane landfalls and associated storm surges. Major storms have pushed sea water across low-lying neighborhoods and damaged local infrastructure, while higher elevations in Old Town experienced less flooding. Evacuation orders are enacted when severe weather systems threaten the Florida Keys.

Cases in America or how not to do it:)

In June, one of our friends had a birthday. We bought him a gift and were all set to go, but we decided to tell them we weren't coming so we could show up as a surprise. We got ready, hopped on a bus, and made it to Harwich. We had to transfer in that town, but then we found out the last bus in that direction had already left. Natasha checked the GPS to see where we were and how far we had to walk. Since we had been there before, I assumed it wasn't far, so we started walking. We walked for three hours. It was getting dark. We started to freeze, so we stopped to buy some coffee. We passed a graveyard (it's not surprising to see cemeteries along the road in America, at least on the Cape, that's for sure). When it got completely dark, we realized it was time to call. Our friends didn't arrive right away because they still had to drive to us. While we waited, we were terrified. We stood hugging each other near the road as cars drove by. We tried to cheer each other up, but we were scared to death)) And by the way, we still had more to walk than what we had already covered. That's how badly we misjudged the distance))) Then they picked us up and took us to the birthday party. We warmed up, calmed down, and congratulated the birthday boy)) We rode in a car where the back seats were sideways! For the birthday, our friend rented out a club. It was just us. It was small, but we danced our hearts out)) By the way, about alcohol: if you're under 21, don't even bother trying to buy it. They won't sell it to you. It's very strict there. And entry to the club was $80 for those 21 and over. We got in because the club was rented out. This day is still in my memory, because that day I experienced a mix of emotions with Natasha: from total fear to happiness)) P.S. Our friends told us we shouldn't have been scared, nothing would have happened to us because this state is very safe. But friends, don't pull surprises like this and take care of yourselves!:) Of course, each of you will have many events that you will remember for a long time) I had a lot of bright and memorable moments over the summer, and I hope you spend your summer 2015 just as well. I would like to dedicate the next pages of my blog to the places I've been. First, I'll tell you about my mini-tour with my girls (Washington-Philadelphia-Boston). On this page, you'll learn how we managed to make this trip as inexpensive as possible. I'll also tell you about how I spent 2 weeks in Miami after 3 months of work. And I'll tell you about a really cool place - Key West) It won't end there)) I have more to tell you:)

The final days before the travel. Semi-finals.

My summer in America is coming to an end. In just a couple of days, I'm heading off on a trip across the vast states) I can't even believe I'm leaving so soon. It feels like just recently I arrived, was getting settled, afraid to speak English, looking for housing, running late for work... At first, time dragged on terribly slowly, and I thought this summer would never end. But the closer it got to the end of summer, the faster time flew by. My route is already set: Niagara Falls(?); Boston, MA; Washington, DC; Miami, FL; Key West, FL; New York, NY. Niagara is still a question mark, I'm not sure if I'll go. But the rest of my route is confirmed. I've already found travel companions for Boston and Washington, so it won't be as boring) Also, in Washington, I plan to meet an acquaintance of mine who has a very interesting life story. She was born in Russia, in St. Petersburg, but was raised in an orphanage until she was 6. Then she was adopted by an American family. Now she lives near Washington and is trying to remember the Russian language. After Washington, I'll fly to Miami, where I also have an acquaintance) This guy is American, studied political relations in college, has been to Russia, loves Russia very much, and wants to build super friendly relations between America and Russia) In short, he's also a very interesting person) I met both him and the girl from Washington on a language learning site when I was trying to improve my English) I'm going to Key West to relax - to lie on the beach all day and do nothing, pure bliss) and then, for the finale, I'll swing by New York, spend my last full day in America there, and the next day I'll fly back home... Transport tickets are already booked, and I'll be staying via Couchsurfing. Although I haven't made arrangements with anyone yet, I need to get moving, otherwise I'll be left without a place to stay. Honestly, I don't really want to go anywhere, I want to spend the remaining 2 weeks in New York, walking around, enjoying the city... Despite the fact that I lived near it, I still haven't walked around enough, there's so much more I want to see... By the way, it's not really common to travel in America) Often, when I tell Americans about my upcoming plans, I hear something like, 'Oh, I haven't left Long Island in my whole life.' And I'm not even talking about the fact that I came here all alone from another country - they just don't get it here)) Although I've changed a bit here myself. I've become Americanized)) I don't know about all the states, but here people don't worry at all about how they look. Many even go to the store in pajamas and it's considered normal) And now I've fallen into the same routine. Back in Moscow, I used to get all dolled up before leaving the house... here, I just don't care how I look) It's like being at a summer cottage - you don't care about your appearance) Well, in principle, Long Island can be called a village, just without the livestock)) I'm packing my suitcases. I'll be on my way soon. I feel like I'm going to miss these places. Every time I go to work, I look at the landscapes around me... and I realize how close these places have become to me. I'm sure I'll miss all these streets, shops, trees, roads... Again, deep down, there's that same fear that enveloped me at the beginning of the trip, I think it's the fear of the unknown. It's not clear at all where I'll be living during the trip, and where fate will take me... But this time it's not a paralyzing feeling, just a light shade that only spurs me on to adventures) So, off I go)

Key West

Our next stop was Key West. Perhaps not everyone knows this place, so it's better to explain that the Florida Keys are a chain of islands in the south of Florida, and Key West is the southernmost of them. It was around 10 p.m. when our bus reached the last island. We gathered our things slowly, stepped off the bus yawning and stretching, and almost fell over! I stood on the steps, gulping down the air, unable to get enough. I wanted to dissolve into that sweet evening air... It was a mix of everything: the scent of flowers, the sea breeze, the warmth of the departing day, and the bitter smoke of cigars... For the first time in my life, I felt like I knew how to breathe. I don't know the best words to describe this place... Forget everything you knew about America and try to imagine a small island washed by the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Gulf of Mexico on the other. Where the streets are full of Cubans selling coconuts and rolling cigars. Where they make the most delicious pie in the world – Key West Lime Pie. Where every evening on the waterfront, they celebrate the sunset with dances, shows, and fireworks. You can try to imagine it, but it's better to see it with your own eyes. Believe me, you'll find plenty to do there! #KeyWest #FloridaKeys

21) PLACE 3. Key West.

The next morning we planned to head to Everglades National Park and Key West. However, we woke up too late, so the first stop was dropped from the itinerary. So, off to the southernmost point of the USA!!!! We were warned that it would be very hot in Florida—when we were there, it wasn't any hotter than in South Carolina. And this was in August, the hottest month. Maybe it had something to do with Hurricane Bill, which was making noise somewhere in the Caribbean and shifting air currents, I don't know, but it was just right.)) The road runs along the chain of the Florida Keys. They are connected by bridges several kilometers long. This is where the palm trees appear (though, still not enough of them, I always want more). We drive without stopping, thinking we'll swim at the end. Yeah, right!!! If you go, stop in the middle (Islamorada, for example)—swim, sunbathe, and enjoy life, because Key West itself is a city without a decent beach!!! Or rather, there is a beach there, but there are cooler ones on the way!!! And this beach doesn't even have a sunset view! AAAAA!!!!!!! Key West turns out to be a real pirate town—a bunch of tipsy guys wandering around the city, and you can't tell who is a local and who came to soak up the atmosphere)) The only beach is in the south of the city—it's cute and completely deserted in the evening. We reached the city around 6 PM. We searched unsuccessfully for a place to watch the sunset. 7:30 PM. It was already dark. We swam at the beach there too. Boom!!! It started pouring like a bucket from above!! Whoosh!!! Thud!! We managed to grab our things. To the cars!!! We drove back with the wipers on max, swaying on the road like crazy. Yes, everything is like that here. If it's hot, it's really hot; if it's salt, it's really salt; if it's water, it's really water, and gas is expensive))

Key West , Florida

Key West, Florida I'm writing this on September 13th, so... wait, it's already the 14th, didn't get to it on the 13th... So, I'll write down what I remember... even though it's bad that I'm not recording it right away, but what else can I do? Life here demands my attention every minute! Anyway. I naturally overslept for 9 AM—I was swimming and lounging in the sun. I left at noon; the road is stunning, not many people, my four seats and the cleanest window =). For the first time, I saw what it's like—blue water (and green in some places), and the islands themselves are like little swamps: sand, half a meter of water with bushes on top, and roots sticking out of the water like little sticks underneath. There must be tons of wildlife there, but how do you even get there? Had a snack on Islamorada island, at Burger King, my favorite. I bought a lot—I'm not saving money anymore =). I saw a herd of green lizards, monsters the size of my arm! Damn! I thought I'd see them again in Key West—turns out, no way, didn't run into them again... Arrived in Key West. 5:30 PM. The station is at the airport, 4 miles to the city, taxis can go to hell, and I'm walking. Although the road turned out not to be as interesting as I thought. The whole beach is covered in seaweed and smells terrible. So I walked through a palm grove. There are signs everywhere, including "no overnight camping"—I hate that rule =) (It doesn't exist on Miami Beach). I reached the southernmost point of the states in an hour and a half, with all the photos; and on the way, I stopped by a so-called "wildlife corner," which was actually a dump in a swamp (I was surprised that it's so dirty in the famous Key West: puddles, smelly seaweed, and trash everywhere). So, in that wildlife dump, it was wet and full of little holes in the ground—turns out crabs live there, from the size of a coin to the size of a huge grapefruit. They see you from several meters away and start scurrying off =) Eyes on stalks =). Also saw birds and a couple of lizards—nothing interesting... Then a local guy explained to me that the reason it's dirty right now is because of Key West after Hurricane Ike; two days ago, the very edge of it passed through here (the center went through Cuba and Haiti, hundreds of people died). Anyway, the edge was enough for Key West—the population was evacuated, and this guy just got back home and is walking around, horrified by how the hurricane messed up his city... All the hotels near the southernmost point monument are flooded, palm trees torn down. Well, I took some photos. At least the northern coast wasn't touched by the hurricane. On the way there, I stopped by the Hemingway House, but it's closed—too late. I first thought the small house was his, but it turned out to be the caretaker's house, and Hemingway's house is that big one. Cats roam around his garden =). I also went to the pier, it's in the south of the city. To get there, you have to sneak through a fancy neighborhood past a security booth. What's good about the pier, besides a docked warship and a US Navy barracks? The fact that there's no one there except for a couple of peaceful homeless guys! The pier itself is huge like a runway, paved with concrete. One homeless guy is fiddling with the settings of some device—I just asked, "What are you doing?" and in response, I listened for a good 10 minutes to a stunning monologue about how the Republicans (the ones with McCain) are jamming his favorite radio station—the Voice of Democracy =)). Another homeless guy, skinny and bearded like Leo Tolstoy, is practicing karate... while sitting... You can't imagine how pleasant, how sweet, how homey it was to watch this pier, bathed in moonlight, in silence, when all you can hear is the waves splashing and the "Voice of Democracy" mumbling something unintelligible =). It's been dark for a long time, but I want to find a wild beach on the northern (untouched by the hurricane, no seaweed) side to spend the night. Accordin

Miami, another day.. =), Florida

Miami, another day.. =), Florida Miami, library, beach, another awesome night... September 13th I wanted to go see Fort Lauderdale, they say there are lots of cool yachts there and the area is generally wealthy. I missed the 12:45 PM bus, went back to the beach and my mood is great again. I found an entrance to the local pier, as far as I understood from the signs, there are yachts worth half a billion bucks there 0_o Why are the prices so crazy for a piece of plastic?? There's a ton of fish under the docks, some kind of perch and such huge colorful fish =) Unfortunately, I didn't get to see the coral reef this time, it was windy in Key West, probably echoes of the hurricane, sand kicked up, waves, and the catamarans aren't offering their $30-40 snorkeling/sunset tours while the weather is bad... It turns out I went south just as a teaser - I will definitely come back, it would be great to bring my family - they deserve it at least as much as the pot-bellied families vacationing in Miami... Speaking of vacationers - there are some very cute girls on the beaches =) but what does that have to do with me, a messy hobo with a backpack. I had an idea to take a photo of each one and write down their contact in a notebook, but I imagined myself in the place of a beautiful girl during such a census and gave up on the idea =) I'm not sure if I'm perceived normally and not as a hobo, and generally speaking, I'm not sure if I'm perceived at all - I'm without any of the usual beads and pendants here, disheveled, in simple clothes, tanned in patches (most strongly between the straps of my sandals or whatever they're called=)). There are a lot of men here who look like they're from the cover of Men's Health, and the women, obviously, are spoiled for choice... I'm saying goodbye to the warm sea, to the sunset sky. I will return. I'm getting on the 9 o'clock bus to Washington. Then there was a funny moment - I forgot my jacket in the restroom at the station while I was washing up. It's a good jacket, so I decided to get it back. I got off at the next station, called, and asked the next bus to bring it - at 10:20 the jacket arrived =) At midnight I finally got on my route. Not many people, my four seats, this is happiness. Warm, good, cozy, time to think. I have 1 day and 6 hours to go... http://blogs.iec.ru/journal/view/singleimage.php?postcard=yes&imageurl=/photos/moshkam/photos/IMG_2740.jpg&user_id=moshkam

47) An instructive MISSION. Our main mistakes and successes

So, let me summarize the main takeaways from the trip here, which might be useful for those just planning their own journey. What we did right: - Bought a good car with A/C. The risk of breaking down during a trip is very high; it's better to overpay a little than to be stuck in Arizona for a week. Driving without A/C is bad. Very bad. We tried it)) - Developed a solid travel plan. When you're on the road, there's no time to think about where to go. And the places we visited were ones we really didn't want to miss. Or not even know about. Because they exist...)) - Sent luggage to New York. During a road trip, there's always less space in the car than when you're packing at home before leaving. - Bought a GPS; without one, you lose precious hours of time. What we did wrong: - Should have allowed for more time. Always take extra time so you don't have to rush, but instead enjoy the trip and have the chance to stay longer somewhere if you like it. This was a huge mistake that significantly affected the whole trip. - Didn't finish university assignments. Get them done at any cost; nothing gets done regarding studies in America. There's a suspicion it's magic. - Didn't withdraw all the money from the cards. It's a huge hassle later. - Sometimes didn't spend money where we should have. Don't be stingy; you'll have memories later. And $80 (for example) comes and goes. Places we would visit again: San Francisco, Monument Valley, Arches National Park, Yellowstone, Yosemite, Chicago, Grand Canyon, Florida coral reefs, shuttle launch, New York, Blue Ridge Parkway (especially in autumn), Sequoia National Park, Crater Lake, Florida Keys. Places we would skip: Key West (the city itself), Disney, Denver, Zion and Bryce Canyon, Mount Rushmore, Lassen Volcanic National Park. Everything else is cool once, but not a second time. Places we didn't visit but should have: Glacier National Park, Boston (with a whale-watching trip), Washington, Niagara, Sonoran Desert in Arizona with 15-meter cacti, Mammoth Cave, Philadelphia, HAWAII, Alaska if it works out, and the US also has islands in the Caribbean (e.g., Virgin Islands) — I'd definitely go there. Maybe Seattle and Houston (not sure). Things worth exploring deeper (off the top of my head): Wander through the neighborhoods of Chicago and New York, hike down to the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon for an overnight stay, go horseback riding with Native Americans in Monument Valley, take a boat trip on Grand Teton Lake, climb the highest rock in Yosemite via the steep rock ladder, go rafting in the Smoky Mountains. As you can see, it all comes down to the fact that you need to spend at least a day and a half in each place (to see it and do something cool). That's the essence of the unsolvable problem, so choose what you like best and do it. "You can't embrace the unembraceable." All lists will be updated as more thoughts come to mind=)
