Residents settling around the southern edge of the Old Tatar Quarter trade modern high-rise conveniences for the routine of a working cathedral mosque tucked into historic residential lanes.
Mortaza Äcimev funded the construction of the building, giving the site its lasting name while the identity of the supervising architect remains unrecorded. Built in a national romance eclectic style, the single-story brick structure incorporates two main halls alongside a prominent minaret set right beside the entrance. The interior finishes follow medieval Oriental decorative patterns rather than neoclassical conventions.
State authorities shut the doors during the Soviet era, halting religious services until comprehensive restorations revived both the outer facades and the interior space. The property was subsequently handed back to the Muslim community for daily worship. Standing in the southern section of the historic Old Tatar Quarter, it forms part of an enduring cluster of stone and timber heritage preserved across the neighborhood.
