New York

Where I stayed: The Bowery House I flew from Chicago to New York, which took about 2.5 hours with American Airlines. I enjoyed flying with this airline. Getting from JFK airport to Manhattan takes about an hour by subway. To use the subway, after exiting the air-train from the airport to Jamaica station, you will need to buy a transit card and pay for the air-train ride ($5). This is done via a kiosk, using cash or a bank card. Be careful when paying with cash (if you insert the bill the wrong way, the machine won't read it and won't return it). The New York subway is not designed for traveling with luggage, so it's better to travel light. If you choose the same hostel as I did, keep in mind that it is located on the third floor of a building with no elevator and steep stairs. The reception is also there, so no one will help you carry your luggage. The hostel has a good location and a favorable price, but the conditions leave much to be desired. Upon check-in, I noticed earplugs offered along with a towel and water, but on Saturday night, I realized why the hostel administration took care of that—besides the noise from other guests, there was the noise of the street from the city that never sleeps. It was hard to fall asleep the first night. First impressions of New York streets shouldn't ruin your mood. Look up, there are the stone jungles of the most famous city in the world! On my first morning in New York, I decided to walk to Central Park. I walked for about an hour, so I didn't have enough energy for a full walk through the park. I only reached the middle, so there will be a reason to return! It's crowded in the park on Sunday, but even on such a day, you could find a quiet place and an empty bench. And that is surprising for a city with 8.5 million residents! In the evening, I headed to Times Square. On the way, you encounter many souvenir shops with affordable goods. Many items looked standard and tasteless. I only found souvenirs worth paying attention to at the New York Public Library and in the shop at the Empire State Building. Walking higher up Broadway, it seems that day turns into night—that's how the lights of the billboards shine. There was a crowd of tourists on the square; despite the fact that police are monitoring order everywhere, be careful and protect your belongings (for example, I wore my backpack on my chest, not on my back). It is there, in Times Square, that you feel the city never sleeps; it's as bright as day! The second day of my New York walks was more intense. Early in the morning, I went to the New York Public Library, then sailed past the Statue of Liberty on the free ferry that runs between Manhattan and Staten Island. While sailing, I felt that hope for a bright future, safety, and peace that this statue instilled in everyone arriving at the shores of America. Afterward, I visited the Memorial Park dedicated to the events of 9/11/2001, because they did not leave the whole world indifferent. The design of the memorial fountains creates a certain mood, forcing everyone who visits to think about the transience and value of life. In the evening, I decided to go up to the observation deck of the Empire State Building. On the way, I passed by the famous St. Patrick's Cathedral, and since it was open to tourists, I found myself inside a Catholic cathedral for the first time. The organ music made an impression on me; its vibrations seemed to shake the air. It's worth hearing at least once! Entry to the evening viewing session at the Empire State Building will cost you $38. Before going up, an exciting exhibition dedicated to the history of one of New York's symbols awaits you. Usually, such exhibitions are boring, but you will like this one! The observation deck is in the open air, so it would be a good idea to bring a jacket or a sweater because it is windy. The view of the night city is fantastic; it's hard to believe you are seeing it live and not on a photo wallpaper: millions of buildings, bi

1 DAY - TRAVELING AROUND THE USA

Our first day was spent in New York. Although we had a quick look around when we arrived in the States, this time we decided to thoroughly explore the most interesting spots. We left our luggage in storage for $6 per suitcase (for the day) using the BagNB app. We got right up to the Empire State Building—New York's very first skyscraper—and walked through the main park, where we were caught in a hailstorm, resulting in wet shoes. We turned red in front of the National Museum of American History staff when, instead of the stated ticket price ($23), we only paid $5😅 Finally, we tried American McDonald's! The burger was very greasy, but the fries were delightful with their crispy texture (though for the price, you could buy 6 kg in Minsk). Then we went to the Hudson Yards area, where we found modern architecture led by a staircase-observation deck structure that looks like a superhero mask😂 After about 100 photos of that staircase, we walked to the 9/11 Memorial (~6 km). The place holds so many tears and human sorrow, yet people sit on the memorial and smile for photos 🤷🏼‍♀️ Next to it is a transport hub shaped like a flying bird. If @alexandramitroshina is to be believed, it is also a sundial that projects holograms of the Twin Towers on September 11th. Not far from the memorial is New York's busiest business street—Wall Street. Unfortunately, it was already dark by the time we got there, so we didn't catch the busiest people 😅 The last point on our route was the Statue of Liberty, which we tried so hard to reach that day. But since we had a flight in a couple of hours, we didn't have time to take a boat ride, but that wasn't a problem! There is a park near the port that we went to. Since the statue is about 3 km away from there, we were able to enjoy the view of the statue ☺️ Since our flight was at 6 AM, we decided not to book accommodation and spent the night at the airport. The last shuttle was leaving in 1.5 hours, so we headed to the airport... https://www.instagram.com/alexandramitroshina/

NEW YORK

After a month, it was time for my first travels. My most desired city was NYC. That was exactly where I dreamed of celebrating my birthday. Round-trip bus tickets from Peter Pan cost $140. New York made an incredible impression on me. It is a city that charms you from the very first minutes. It mesmerizes with the scale of its buildings and structures, amazes with its frantic rhythm, the incredible flow of people, and the contrast expressed in the combination of luxury life with marginalized people sleeping on the streets and piles of trash. New York is a real concrete jungle. Central Park is probably one of the few places with greenery and trees. Overall, I was delighted with the city. Must-visit places in NYC (with addresses): *TIP FOR FUTURE PARTICIPANTS: to make it easier to navigate in unfamiliar places, download offline maps) Excursion “Panoramic view from the 86th floor of the Empire State Building” - $41 (20 W 34th St, New York) One-hour ferry tour to the Statue of Liberty - $30. One of the most affordable. Includes arrival at the destination, a minute stop, and return to the pier. National September 11 Memorial & Museum. A complex built on the site of the destroyed World Trade Center (180 Greenwich St, New York) Brooklyn Bridge (Brooklyn Bridge, New York, NY 10038) Central Park (Central park) Times Square (Manhattan, NY 10036) Manhattan District 5th Avenue (a street where boutiques of famous designers are located; a symbol of American prestige and luxury) Wall Street — financial center (Wall Street) Grand Central Terminal (89 E 42nd St, New York) Broadway. Here, among the skyscrapers, are the offices of the largest American and global corporations. (Broadway) Rockefeller Center — a place known for the fact that the very same Christmas tree is installed there annually;). (45 Rockefeller Plaza, New York) St. Patrick's Cathedral (5th Ave, New York, NY 10022)

New-York

New York is an endless topic of conversation, a special world that, it seemed to me, lives by its own rules. It is also the most popular tourist city in the world. There are many places in New York that are a must-visit. But, unfortunately, I only managed to visit some of them. I will start, perhaps, with that tragic place known to the whole world – World Trade Center, where the Twin Towers once stood. Two fountains, symbolizing the tears and pain of the American people, serve as a reminder of those events. I think that anyone who has had the chance to visit New York will definitely visit this place. World Trade Center And how could I miss Lower Manhattan, Wall Street, and Times Square? Despite my limited time, I couldn't help but go there, and also take the opportunity to see the Statue of Liberty with my own eyes. The Brooklyn Bridge, all lit up, which connects two parts of the city – Brooklyn and Manhattan – left a huge impression. The narrow street of Wall Street led us to the huge bronze statue of a bull, which is the unofficial symbol of New York's Financial District and represents strength and assertiveness. Everyone strives to touch it for financial luck, which, of course, we did too)) Nighttime Brooklyn bridge Times Square is the most popular place in New York. A stunning sight – lights, advertisements, crowds of people, boutiques, theaters – Times Square combines all of this. I was amazed by the four-story M&M’s store with huge capsules of colorful M&M’s candies. I also really wanted to visit Central Park, Empire State Building, Madison Square Garden, but I didn't manage to… Well, that's a reason to return to New York and definitely see the rest with my own eyes ))) Times Square – pure madness M&M’s – that's what I love)

New York is the city where dreams come true!

Next on our path was the city of dreams – New York. Upon arriving in America, we didn't manage to explore the city as we headed straight to our small town in New Jersey, but at the end of our trip, we were able to fully enjoy and surrender ourselves to the metropolis. Yes, the scale of the American cultural capital didn't just amaze – it completely captivated us! But wild delight was often replaced by surprise or even disgust at the dirty streets, filling up with piles of trash by evening. And since one of the goals of the trip was to dispel myths and break stereotypes, we wanted to do it all. So, in the last few weeks before flying back to Belarus, we explored literally every corner of the city from Hollywood blockbusters, trying to remember everything and miss nothing. The thrill of riding the ferry with a view of Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty, the huge skyscrapers, people from all corners of the world, an incredible number of tourists, the huge and dirty subway, the ubiquitous piles of trash, the majestic and inspiring Empire State Building, Central Park – a breath of fresh air in New York with its living nature and calm atmosphere, a huge number of chic boutiques and shops, sharply contrasting with the poverty of other city districts, constant parades and demonstrations – all this made up my own picture of this city. The trip to the United States of America turned out to be truly amazing and inspiring. The only thing I regret is not being able to see places I really wanted to visit. But I fulfilled my summer American plan and even slightly over-fulfilled it, so away with regrets! Now I only recall my achievement with pride. This trip taught me how to survive in a foreign country with a different culture, people, and climate. It taught me to be truly adult and face difficulties. I managed to overcome the language barrier, not to be afraid to speak and make mistakes. This trip gave me even more self-belief, love for life, and for those around me. Fight for your dreams and don't be afraid to make them come true! I believe, America, that we will see each other again!
