About the place

Seoul Station anchors passenger rail transit across South Korea by linking national train lines directly to the capital city subway network.

The rail terminal originated as Namdaemun Station in a small wooden structure following the extension of the Gyeongin Line north of the Han River. Subsequent additions linked the Gyeongbu and Gyeongui lines into the passenger network. The original station building operated as Gyeongseong Station when the capital bore that historical name, before adopting its current title.

Postwar expansion added Southern and Western annexes alongside a raised walkway to accommodate the national railroad offices. Private funding subsequently delivered a dedicated station building in time for the Seoul Olympics, followed by an adjacent terminal built for high-speed rail service. Metropolitan subway platforms connect directly with these intercity rail lines.
