Long-term residents treat Ljubljana Zoo as a quiet woodland escape beyond the Center District, turning a quick animal visit into an everyday walking habit through all seasons.
The city board established the institution in the Center District before transferring the animal collection to its expansive parkland home. The administration maintains the property as the national zoological garden, keeping admission active through winter snow and summer heat. Enclosures house mammals and birds from varied climates, including saimiri colonies, alpacas, red pandas, and California sea lions.
A comprehensive modernization programme overhauled aging habitats and brought specialized exhibits for carnivores and wetlands species. Swedish partners from Borås djurpark supplied cheetahs to occupy a redesigned habitat, while separate compounds introduced lynxes, raccoons, Siberian cranes, and greater flamingos. These additions transformed historical municipal pens into modern conservation enclosures.
