О месте

Ford's Theatre operates simultaneously as an active stage and a national historic site.

The building began as a Baptist meeting house before John T. Ford converted the structure into a playhouse called Ford's Athenaeum. After a destructive fire, Ford rebuilt the venue into a major performance hall. Its history shifted permanently when John Wilkes Booth shot President Abraham Lincoln inside the presidential box during a stage play. Lincoln was carried across Tenth Street to Petersen House.

Federal authorities seized the property immediately after the attack and prohibited further public entertainment. The War Department repurposed the interior into records storage, medical museum space, and clerk offices. Decades later, a fatal interior collapse halted office work until major structural repairs were completed. The site eventually transferred to the National Park Service to become a dedicated memorial museum.

Congressional legislation and sustained preservation lobbying led to a full reconstruction that revived live theatrical performances alongside museum operations. Today, the complex includes Petersen House across the street and the Center for Education and Leadership. Long-term residents in the neighborhood encounter active drama productions and educational exhibits sharing the same historic brick footprint.
