Residents in Santiago walk through Parque Forestal directly into the exhibition halls, using the permanent collection as a quiet workspace away from downtown traffic.
The institution began under the name of the National Painting Museum during the administration of President Aníbal Pinto. Key state officials and local artists, including Manuel García de la Huerta, Marcos Segundo Maturana, and sculptor José Miguel Blanco, coordinated the initiative. The painter Juan Mochi assumed leadership as the inaugural director before the collection transferred to a dedicated exposition venue.
Architect Emilio Jéquier created the permanent neoclassical palace inside Parque Forestal, following park grounds planned by French-trained landscaper Jorge Enrique Dubois. The building opened during the centennial celebrations of national independence. Structural reinforcements following major seismic activity protected the main galleries, leaving only minor exterior repairs after subsequent tremors.
