Tenants in western Damascus live directly beneath the ridge of Mezzeh, where the shuttered fortress overlooks the capital from above the neighborhood.
The decommissioned complex occupies a prominent hilltop overlooking Damascus from the western district of Mezzeh. Historical records trace the stone fortress back to the Crusades. French authorities reconstructed the compound during the Mandate for Syria and the Lebanon, using the cells to confine anti-colonial insurgents and political opponents.
Following an early military takeover, coup leader Husni al-Za'im jailed his predecessor in the facility before suffering his own overthrow and detention there shortly afterward. Successive coups turned the Ba'athist-operated site into the standard destination for ousted heads of state and political detainees. The compound ceased operations when Bashar al-Assad ordered its definitive closure, releasing all remaining inmates.
