Soviet designers built the combat vehicle around a heavier smoothbore cannon to counter newly reinforced foreign armor.

The main battle tank evolved directly from earlier mass-produced hulls to counter thicker Western frontal plating. Soviet commanders discovered that standard armor-piercing shells lacked the penetration required against opposing vehicles, prompting the installation of a smoothbore cannon capable of launching fin-stabilized discarding sabot rounds. This weapon required a broader hull and enlarged turret ring.

Design bureaus at the Nizhny Tagil factory initially developed experimental prototypes featuring aluminum road wheels, two-plane stabilization systems, and low-profile diesel engine mounts. High production costs halted these early variants, but engineers adapted their internal ammunition storage layouts and widened turret rings to balance the heavier weight on stretched chassis equipped with automatic cartridge ejection.

Associações
  • Smoothbore main gunFires high-velocity fin-stabilized sabot projectiles at enemy armor.
  • Cast steel turretMaintains a compact silhouette while absorbing heavy recoil energy.
  • Production cost overrunsAdvanced experimental prototypes proved too expensive for serial production.
  • Torsion bar suspensionReconfigured beam layouts balance the added forward weapon mass.
Factos
  • Engineers added automatic cartridge-case ejectors to modernised turret assemblies.
  • The vehicle design preserved the low profile and thick turret armor of its direct predecessor series.
  • Designers repositioned hull torsion beams to balance the additional weight of larger smoothbore weaponry.
  • The development team repurposed upper fuel cell compartments to store additional tank gun ammunition.
