Fredriksberg Fortress crowns the rocky summit of Nordnes, watching over the sea approaches to the inner harbor.

Dutch military engineer Henrik Ruse planned the fortification after the naval Battle of Vågen exposed local defensive vulnerabilities. Workers erected curtain walls along the western cliffs and bastions facing the inland approach, though royal neglect left the works unfinished for decades. An inspection by Christian Gyldenløve revived the project, producing a simplified ring of defenses bearing King Fredrik's name.
