Sobre o local

Ishiyama Hongan-ji was the central stronghold of the Ikko-ikki warrior monks before the city expanded across its footprint.

The fortified complex operated as the main bastion of the Ikko-ikki, an alliance of militant Buddhist clergy and local commoners resisting samurai dominion during the Sengoku period. Builders established the compound at the mouth of the Yodo River along the Seto Inland Sea, securing vital maritime approaches and river junctions in Settsu Province just outside the former capital of Naniwa.

Archaeological excavations revealed that builders erected the temple directly over the subterranean ruins of the ancient imperial palace. Subsequent urban expansion gradually enveloped the entire fortress grounds, incorporating the historic perimeter into the surrounding city. Those residing near the site move through a dense urban fabric where modern municipal developments cover successive layers of monastic defenses and imperial courts.
