Sobre o local

Kamigamo Shrine operates as an imperial Shinto sanctuary along the northern banks of the Kamo River.

The sanctuary carries the formal designation of Kamo-wakeikazuchi Shrine and stands along the upper Kamo River in northern Kyoto. Historically paired with Shimogamo Shrine, the complex served as a chief Shinto shrine for Yamashiro Province before receiving the top rank of government-supported shrines. Early imperial patronage established the grounds as a spiritual center dedicated to the realm's thunder deity.

Imperial involvement shaped daily authority across the grounds. Emperor Heizei granted the sanctuary a consecrated seal for official paperwork, keeping the stamp in a dedicated portable shrine. Emperor Murakami dispatched court messengers to report national occurrences to the guardian deity, while later sovereigns sought direct sanctuary on site, including Emperor Nakamikado sheltering inside the Hosodono hall.
