Tenants living around Lipótváros dodge tourist surges across the basilica square during the day, relying on the pedestrian perimeter for quiet evenings once groups disperse.
Before stone foundations were laid, the site operated as the Hetz-Theater, an arena devoted to staged animal fights. After the theater closed, local residents built a temporary church to serve the expanding district of Lipótváros. A catastrophic flood later inundated the surrounding city, but this elevated knoll shielded escaping survivors, inspiring extensive community donations toward a permanent monumental structure.
Planners initially selected Saint Leopold as patron before dedicating the church to King Stephen, whose mummified right hand remains in the reliquary. Backing from banker Simon Sinas financed construction, while a papal decree elevated the sanctuary to a basilica minor. The landmark hosted the International Eucharistic Congress and sheltered state archival collections within its cellar during wartime bombardments.
