Schumacher designed the Maria-Louisen-Strasse complex for daily school routine, so scholars using the historical library share the courtyard with bustling pupils rather than silent archives.
Johannes Bugenhagen established the institution as a Latin school within a secularised monastery courtyard after introducing the Lutheran church order to the city republic. Hamburg financed the foundation to educate future scholars and civic patricians in classical languages, maintaining Greek and Latin as the curriculum core. Early Enlightenment thinkers taught here alongside composers Georg Philipp Telemann and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach.
The institution later shifted across the city, leaving its original site for a classicist complex at Speersort that survived the Great Fire while surrounding churches burned. Architect Fritz Schumacher subsequently designed the dedicated campus on Maria-Louisen-Strasse, creating the brick structures and courtyard that hold protected heritage status. Sculptor Engelbert Peiffer added the memorial monument honouring the founder.
Beyond ordinary secondary instruction, the school preserves an extensive historical research library accessible to academic visitors. Long-term international ties define the community, stemming from an exchange with Latymer Upper School in London that began as a postwar reconciliation effort. The municipal government continues to fund the school, which operates as an active state gymnasium rather than a museum.
