Tenants in the surrounding streets pay steep rents to treat this enclosed park as an everyday yard, running quiet morning loops past the colonnade and pyramid before afternoon crowds arrive.
Philippe d'Orléans hired Louis Carrogis Carmontelle to build a pleasure garden designed to astonish visitors by uniting distant places and historical eras. Instead of uniform lawns, the grounds received an Egyptian pyramid, a Roman colonnade, a pond with water lilies, and antique statues. Thomas Blaikie later reshaped sections toward English landscape traditions, leaving an eclectic layout where classical masonry meets curving paths.
Claude Nicolas Ledoux designed the circular Doric rotunda along the northern boundary, placing a customs office on the lower floor and living quarters above. The park was nationalized after the Duke faced execution during political purges, while balloonist André-Jacques Garnerin later used the lawns to complete a historic parachute descent. Broad carriage ways and surviving monuments now anchor daily pedestrian life across the grounds.
