About the place

A surviving Gothic outpost anchors the northern gateway of the historic defensive ring.

The brick stronghold was constructed as a fortified checkpoint outside the main perimeter, connected directly to St. Florian Gate through a covered corridor. Featuring a circular courtyard, encircling turrets, and dense embrasures along its defensive walls, the moated structure controlled incoming traffic into the royal capital while reinforcing urban security during conflicts with Ottoman forces.

The installation saw active combat during Austrian and Swedish sieges, as well as later confrontations with Russian troops. Although scheduled for complete demolition when municipal authorities dismantled the surrounding medieval ramparts, intervention by local senators Feliks Radwanski and Jan Librowski halted its destruction. The preserved fortress remains an open historical venue for exhibitions.
