Living plant collections grow directly on the grounds of the United States Capitol.

The institution originated from congressional expeditions sent to circumnavigate the globe and explore the Pacific Ocean. Commander Charles Wilkes gathered live and dried botanical specimens using specialized wardian cases on maritime voyages. While the preserved dried specimens became the foundation of the National Herbarium at the Smithsonian Institution, the living plants established the permanent congressional collection.

Naval chaplain and abolitionist Photius Fisk expanded the scientific holdings by gathering rare flora across South America, including vanilla vines and Brazilian cattleya orchids. Botanist W. D. Breckenridge integrated these documented field specimens into the Capitol grounds. The conservatory complex stands southwest of the Capitol near the James A. Garfield Monument, operating separate offsite facilities to maintain live stock.
