Residents living nearby must plan around restricted summer open days because private occupants reside in the colonial manor year-round.
A British army major from the Walke family erected the Georgian brick dwelling, historically known as Brick House Farm, after his ancestors accumulated merchant wealth trading with Barbados. That commercial network dealt in rum and enslaved labor, establishing ties with prominent colonial figures. The estate operated as an expansive agricultural plantation worked by enslaved laborers before successive sales reduced the grounds.
Political divides marked the property during the American Revolution, when the owner supported the Whig cause while surrounding county residents favored the British Crown. Following the conflict, the family delegate represented the area at the state convention that ratified the federal Constitution. The site remains an occupied private home rather than a daily museum, restricting public tours to select summer dates.
