Bostonians duck into narrow alleys around Downtown Crossing every evening, trading modern space for compact historic quarters where Brahmin traditions still linger in daily life.
The establishment operated inside a Greek Revival structure, growing under Louis Ober with capital from retail founder Eben Jordan. It functioned as an exclusive gathering place for local financiers and politicians, serving classical French fare and seafood amid imported Bohemian crystal, English silver, and carved Honduran mahogany.
For generations, the dining rooms barred women entirely, reflecting the rigid social exclusions of historical downtown clubs. Chef Lydia Shire later oversaw a detailed architectural restoration of the historic rooms before the landmark finally shut down. A modern restaurant now occupies the interior on the National Register of Historic Places.
