Qasr Al Hosn stands as the oldest stone structure in the city, marking the original defensive settlement around the island freshwater well.

The compound began as a solitary conical watchtower erected to protect the only freshwater well on the island. Builder Mohammed Al Bastaki supervised the defensive stonework, creating what remains the oldest standing stone building in the capital. The tower secured vital water reserves for early coastal settlements before expanding into a fort under the ruler Shakhbut bin Dhiyab Al Nahyan.

The fortified palace housed the ruling Sheikh and operated as the seat of government. Early oil concession revenues funded a major structural expansion that gave the complex its current profile. Subsequent restoration projects applied a bright white exterior coating, establishing the White Fort name despite darker original stones. Today the property welcomes visitors under partial public access.
