Long-term field workers rarely count on routine passenger flights landing at this runway, relying instead on the overland road corridor from the southern coast to bring in heavy cargo and personnel.

Niamtougou International Airport stands as the primary runway installation in northern Togo, built to handle heavy transport aircraft alongside official state operations.

The airfield occupies ground in Baga north of Niamtougou, ranking as the country's second largest international aviation facility behind the capital hub at Lome-Tokoin. Engineers laid a long runway capable of handling wide-body DC transport craft alongside dedicated apron space for multiple parked planes. Its infrastructure was designed to give the northern territory direct heavy air access independent of coastal ports.

Flight activity centers almost exclusively on Togolese Air Force operations and civilian government missions, with private or chartered arrivals occurring infrequently. Previous ventures to maintain scheduled commercial passenger routes connecting Ouagadougou and Lome proved economically unsustainable. Expats and regional project personnel must coordinate their travel by road rather than relying on commercial timetables.
