The largest stadium in the country hosts Dutch club Ajax alongside premier continental tournaments and international concert tours.

Planned after the municipal Summer Olympic Games bid failed, the project moved to Amsterdam Zuidoost to give Ajax a permanent ground after outgrowing De Meer. Planners integrated a transit facility called a Transferium into the site, allowing drivers to switch directly onto passenger rail. Formally renamed to honour Johan Cruyff, the arena hosts club matches and continental tournaments.

The engineering pairing of a retractable roof with natural grass created chronic turf maintenance problems, as roof shadows starved the pitch of sunlight and forced repeated field replacements. Recent renovations altered the stadium profile from a concave curve to a convex exterior by widening the peripheral walkway rings. This structural expansion eases spectator congestion during major European tournaments and global concert tours.
