Residents around Museum Island accept blocked paths during state ceremonies and weekend crowds, balancing the commotion against choral performances across the Lustgarten.
The present stone collegiate church at the Lustgarten rose under imperial decree according to designs by Julius Raschdorff in Renaissance and Baroque Revival forms. Beyond routine Sunday liturgy, the sanctuary hosts official state ceremonies and orchestral concerts beneath its main dome. The extensive crypt functions as a major dynastic burial place for the Hohenzollern family, preserving royal sarcophagi beneath the central nave.
The institution originated as a Catholic castle chapel inside the Berlin Palace at Cölln before obtaining collegiate status through papal decrees. That collegiate foundation gave rise to the customary German designation Domkirche, even though the building never served as the seat of a bishop. Subsequent eras brought conversion to Lutheranism and later royal Calvinism, establishing a layered Protestant tradition across the capital.
